Step-by-step itinerary

Culinary tour of Kuala Lumpur Chinatown

  • Meet local host at Central Market
  • Try Malaysian-style cookies
  • Walk to Petaling Street market
  • Sample Bakkwa Chinese dry meat
  • Taste Malaysian style pancake
  • Drink hot or cold soya bean drink
  • Try local tropical fruits
  • Sample Teh tarik and roti canai
  • Taste Chinese Hokkien mee noodles
  • Return to Central Market

The experience

Start at Central Market's information counter, where you'll meet your local host and begin with Malaysian-style cookies: a buttery introduction to the flavors you'll encounter over the next three hours. From there, the walk moves into Petaling Street, the heart of Chinatown, where the stalls and energy of the market set the pace for what comes next.

The route takes you through stops for bakkwa (Chinese dry meat in Malaysian style, two types to sample), apam balik (a Malaysian pancake with sugar, corn and crushed peanuts), and a soya bean drink served hot as tofu fa or cold, plus tropical fruits along the way. You'll also taste local fruits as you walk. Each stop is built around what's actually cooked and sold there, not a staged tasting. You're eating where locals eat.

Midway through, you head to a local Indian Muslim restaurant for teh tarik (Malaysia's signature pulled tea) and roti canai, a breakfast flatbread. The final stop is a Chinese restaurant for hokkien mee, a stir-fried noodle dish. The walk ends back at Central Market. Bottled water is included. If you follow a halal, vegetarian or allergy-restricted diet, let your host know at booking so they can guide you to the right choices at each stop. Transport to Central Market is your own (use a taxi or Grab), but the walking and all food tastings are covered.
