The Experience
We’d barely finished our kopi when the driver pulled up right outside our hotel in Kuala Lumpur—on time, which I honestly didn’t expect with this traffic. The air-con was a relief; it’s that sticky kind of heat here that clings to your shirt. Fifteen minutes later we rolled up at Batu Caves. Our guide, Ravi, handed us a bottle of water and grinned at the 272 steps ahead. The gold statue of Lord Karthikeyan glinted in the sun—so tall you have to lean back just to see his face. I tried not to look down as we climbed (my legs still feel it). Inside Cathedral Cave, incense hung thick in the air and you could hear prayers echoing off the limestone. Monkeys darted around tourists—one nearly made off with someone’s snack.
After catching our breath (and maybe sweating through my shirt), we headed for Thean Hou Temple. It’s perched on a hill with these wild red lanterns strung everywhere. Our guide explained how the Hainanese community built it for Mazu—the sea goddess—and pointed out couples taking wedding photos under the arches. There were food stalls outside selling things I couldn’t pronounce; Li laughed when I tried to say “chee cheong fun” in Mandarin—probably butchered it. But that rice roll was weirdly comforting after all those stairs.
We drove through Little India next—the colors almost too much for tired eyes: saris, flower garlands, stacks of spices spilling onto the street. Ravi slowed down so we could watch people haggling over mangoes and incense sticks. Chinatown was louder somehow—Petaling Street packed with vendors calling out prices for shoes and knockoff jerseys, the smell of barbecue fish mixing with sweet tea steam. We ducked into Central Market for souvenirs (I bought a tiny pewter turtle for luck) before stopping at Petronas Twin Towers for the classic photo op—tourists everywhere trying to get both towers in one shot without lying on the ground.
The whole thing lasted about four hours but felt longer—in a good way. It’s strange how a city can be so many things at once: sacred caves, neon temples, old markets, glass towers reaching past the clouds. Sometimes I still think about that first breath inside Batu Caves—all stone and incense—and wonder if I’ll ever climb those steps again.
