You'll climb the 272 steps to reach the golden statue of Lord Murugan inside the cave shrine, while your guide explains the Hindu roots woven through the nation's history and culture. The caves themselves are home to various religious deities and have drawn pilgrims for generations.

From there, the route moves to Thean Hou Temple, a 6-tiered pagoda temple completed in 1989 and built by the Hainanese community of Kuala Lumpur. It's dedicated to the goddess Tian Hou, the Heavenly Mother. Next is the National Mosque of Malaysia, set across 13 acres of manicured gardens—a striking example of mid-century architecture designed in the late 1950s to represent the aspirations of the newly independent nation. (If your tour falls on a Friday, this stop is skipped due to visitor restrictions.)

The final stops take you through Chinatown, where dozens of food stalls and restaurants run by Chinese, Indian, Malay and Bangladeshi traders serve curry noodles, Hokkien mee, ikan bakar and asam laksa, and then into Little India in Brickfields—a maze of textile shops, jewelry stores and low-key restaurants with dosa pancakes and banana-leaf curries. You'll also pass the Hindu temple Sri Kandaswamy Kovil with its golden statues and the Buddhist Maha Vihara temple with its bodhi tree and domed pagoda.
