itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Batu Caves and Kuala Lumpur cultural sites

  • Drive 30 minutes to Batu Caves
  • Climb 272 steps to Lord Murugan statue
  • Visit Thean Hou Temple pagoda
  • See National Mosque and gardens
  • Explore Chinatown food stalls
  • Walk through Little India and temples

Ever wondered if your legs would forgive you after 272 steps? I did, standing at the foot of Batu Caves just outside Kuala Lumpur, staring up at Lord Murugan’s golden statue shimmering in the sticky morning air. Our guide, Suresh, handed out bottles of water and told us about the Thaipusam festival — apparently people carry milk pots on their heads all the way up. I was already sweating by step 40. Monkeys darted around us, eyeing any snack or shiny thing. There was incense in the air, and some kind of sweet fried smell from a stall below — not sure what it was but it made me hungry even before lunch.

Thean Hou Temple came next, perched up on Robson Heights. We got there just as a wedding party was finishing photos — red lanterns everywhere, laughter echoing under the pagoda roofs. Suresh explained how the Hainanese community built this six-tiered temple for Tian Hou, “Heavenly Mother.” The tiles were cool under my hands; I touched one dragon carving and felt this odd wave of calm. Not something I’d expected in such a busy city.

We swung by the National Mosque (Masjid Negara), which is all bold lines and blue domes set in gardens that smelled faintly of rain and jasmine. They loaned us robes at the entrance — mine kept slipping off my shoulder until an older lady helped me fix it with a practiced tug. Inside was quiet except for distant prayers and shoes squeaking on marble.

By late morning we were weaving through Chinatown’s food stalls — steam rising from curry noodles, someone shouting for more Hokkien mee. I tried asam laksa (tart and fishy) while Suresh pointed out which stalls had been here since his childhood. Then Little India: bright saris fluttering above shops, dosa sizzling on hot plates, gold bangles clinking everywhere. I asked for extra chili with my banana-leaf curry; probably a mistake but worth it for that heat. My shirt still smells faintly like cardamom now.
