The Experience

Batu Caves comes first—a limestone hill north of the city carved into a series of temple chambers where thousands of Hindu worshippers gather, especially during Thaipusam. The climb is 272 steps, steep and long enough that the guide will tell you to bring water and sunscreen. Monkeys live in the caves and will approach if they smell food. At the top, the skyline of Kuala Lumpur spreads across the horizon.

From there the driver takes you to the National Mosque, a contemporary building near the bird park that blends traditional Islamic art with modern design. You cannot enter the prayer hall itself, but you walk the inner courtyard and see the calligraphy and ornamentation up close. The staff provides appropriate dress—long sleeves and covered shoulders for both men and women—so you are ready when you arrive. Next is Thean Hou Temple, a six-tiered Buddhist structure also called the Temple of the Goddess of Heaven. The carvings are intricate: Chinese dragons and phoenixes cover the beams, balustrades, roofs and cornices. Inside are three primary deities—the Goddess of Heaven in the center, the Goddess Shui Wei Sheng Niang to her left, and the Goddess of Mercy to her right.

A stop at a Gurdwara introduces Sikhism, then the tour ends in Chinatown, where dozens of food stalls and restaurants line the streets. Chinese, Indian, Malay and Bangladeshi traders serve curry noodles, Hokkien mee, barbecued fish and asam laksa—the sour, fish and tamarind soup that defines the neighborhood. The driver waits while you walk and eat, or you can browse and return to the vehicle when ready.
