The Experience

The 42.7-metre statue of Lord Murugan stands at the base of Batu Caves, 13 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur, and it's the first thing you see when you arrive. The caves themselves are a limestone outcrop that's been shaped for worship since 1891, when an Indian trader named K. The 272 concrete steps lead up to the Cathedral Cave, which rises almost 100 metres above ground and has a ceiling so high it feels like you're inside a cathedral carved by nature rather than built by hands. The air shifts as you climb — it gets cooler, quieter. Inside, ornate Hindu shrines line the walls, and the light filters through the cave openings in a way that makes the stone glow. Monkeys move through the caves freely, so you'll see them on the steps and around the entrances; they're part of the landscape here, not a surprise. The limestone itself is around 400 million years old, which is the kind of fact that lands differently when you're standing inside it.

Beyond the main Temple Cave, there are two more cave temples at the base — the Art Gallery Cave and Museum Cave, both filled with Hindu statues and paintings. The Ramayana Cave tells the story of Rama across its irregular walls, and on the way there you'll pass a 50-foot statue of Hanuman, the monkey devotee. The whole complex was renovated and established as the Cave Villa in 2008, so the temples are well-maintained without feeling sterile.
