The Experience
“Take your time on the steps. No rush here,” our driver, Mr. Ravi, said as we stood at the foot of Batu Caves. I could smell incense drifting out from somewhere up above, mixing with fried snacks from a cart nearby. The stairs looked endless—272 of them—and I was already regretting my choice of sneakers (should’ve gone for something grippier). Monkeys darted around us, bold and curious, one almost snatching a bag of peanuts from a kid in front. The limestone felt cool when I touched it, rough under my palm as I paused halfway up to catch my breath. I didn’t expect to feel so small inside that main cavern—statues everywhere, gold paint catching bits of morning light.
Afterward, we drove out of Kuala Lumpur toward Genting Highlands. The road wound through green hills dotted with little towns; I kept rolling down the window just to feel the air change—more humid, then suddenly cooler as we climbed higher. Our guide pointed out rubber trees and told us about his childhood trips up here (“Always got carsick,” he admitted, which made me laugh because I was starting to feel it too). At the Skyway cable car station, there was this low hum of people chatting in different languages—families, couples, some older folks who seemed just as excited as the kids.
The cable car itself was smoother than I’d expected. We floated over rainforest so thick you couldn’t see the ground in places—just green on green on green. Sometimes clouds drifted right past our window; for a second it felt like we were inside them. My friend tried to take a selfie but ended up with only fog behind her head (she still posted it). Up at the top, there’s this mix of cool air and casino lights—not what I pictured when I thought “mountain.” But honestly? That view back down into the valley sticks with me more than anything else we did that day.
