The Experience

“Take your time on the steps. No rush here,” our driver, Mr. Ravi, said as we stood at the foot of Batu Caves. I could smell incense drifting out from somewhere up above, mixing with fried snacks from a cart nearby. I didn’t expect to feel so small inside that main cavern—statues everywhere, gold paint catching bits of morning light.

Afterward, we drove out of Kuala Lumpur toward Genting Highlands. The road wound through green hills dotted with little towns; I kept rolling down the window just to feel the air change—more humid, then suddenly cooler as we climbed higher.
