The experience

You leave Antananarivo early and spend roughly 12 hours driving south through Madagascar's highlands, traditional villages and countryside to reach Ranomafana National Park. That evening, a local guide takes you on a night walk through the forest to find mouse lemurs, chameleons, frogs and other nocturnal wildlife active after dark. The next morning you return to the forest with the same guide for a daytime hike, spotting different lemur species, birds, reptiles and the rainforest's layered plant life before driving on to Fianarantsoa.

From Fianarantsoa you head south through highland scenery toward Ambalavao, then into Anja Reserve for a guided walk among ring-tailed lemurs and granite rock formations. The landscape shifts as you approach Isalo, where you spend a full day with a guide exploring the park's sandstone canyons, deep pools and unique vegetation. Late afternoon takes you to Isalo Window, a natural rock formation framing the sunset over the surrounding landscape. On the final day you drive south through southern Madagascar's terrain to Toliara, then continue to Mangily, a quiet coastal village near Ifaty where the tour ends in the late afternoon.

The entire journey runs in a private vehicle with air conditioning and a guide who speaks your language (English, Spanish or Italian). Park entrance fees and all guided visits are included. You arrange your own meals and hotels beyond what the operator provides.
