The experience
The tour departs Antananarivo early and drives four hours to Andasibe, stopping en route at Peyreiras Private Park where you handle multiple species of chameleons, snakes, Uroplatus geckos, Mantella frogs and tomato frogs. After checking into your hotel in Andasibe, a guide leads you through VOIMMA Reserve at night to spot mouse lemurs, woolly lemurs, chameleons and tree frogs: the nocturnal animals most travelers miss on a single visit.
Day two splits between two reserves. A guided trek through Analamazaotra Special Reserve focuses on the Indri Indri, Madagascar's largest lemur, recognizable by its loud, haunting calls that carry through the rainforest. After lunch, Vakona Reserve lets you interact with Brown Lemurs, Black-and-White Ruffed Lemurs and Dancing Sifaka at close range, then walk through the crocodile park to see Nile crocodiles and other endemic species.
The return to Antananarivo on day three includes a surprise detour to an undisclosed site, then a visit to Rova, the Queen's Palace, where a museum holds royal artifacts and fossils. The tour ends with drop-off at your chosen location in the capital. An air-conditioned vehicle and professional guide accompany the entire journey. Accommodation is three-star standard and included, though meals and personal expenses are not.
