The Experience

You know you’re somewhere different the moment the scent of wet earth hits you—especially after a rain shower in Ranomafana. We started our journey winding through quiet highland roads, rice paddies on both sides, kids waving as we passed. Our guide, Mamy, pointed out fruit orchards I’d never seen before—tiny lychees and jackfruit hanging heavy from the trees. Sometimes the road gets bumpy, but that’s just part of travel here.

Ambositra was a surprise. The whole town buzzes with woodcarvers and artists; you’ll hear the tap-tap of chisels everywhere. I picked up a hand-carved zebu figurine from a woman named Lalao—she told me her family’s been doing this for generations. Later, in Andasibe National Park, we woke up early (before sunrise!) to catch the Indri Indri lemurs calling out across the forest. Their voices echo—it’s wild, almost haunting.

Isalo National Park felt like another planet: sandstone towers, hidden swimming holes where we cooled off after hiking under the midday sun. Ranomafana’s rainforest is thick and alive—you’ll spot chameleons if you look close enough. And then there’s Ifaty at the end: fishermen mending nets on powdery sand, palm trees swaying in a salty breeze. The coral reef keeps the water calm and clear—perfect for just floating or watching locals bring in their morning catch.
