The experience
The tour leaves Antananarivo heading south through the rural highlands, stopping at Ambatolampy to visit a family aluminum-pot workshop, then moving into tea plantations near Fianarantsoa where you taste different grades of tea fresh from processing. From there you shift into the solidarity tourism section: a multi-day stay with local families in the villages around Ambohimahamasina, where you hike to Itaolana mountain (one of three sacred peaks at 1,489 meters) and pass through primary forest after the guide performs a ritual request to the ancestors. You visit blacksmith forges and silk weavers, learning their techniques hands-on before moving on.
The second half turns to serious mountain trekking. You enter Andringitra National Park and climb Boby Peak over two days of hiking, crossing what the itinerary calls the "extra-terrestrial" circuit: surreal lunar landscapes of granite and endemic palm forest. After descending to the Tsaranoro valley, you choose from four different day hikes: a ring-tailed lemur circuit through sacred forest, a climb up Mont Caméléon with views across the southern highlands, or a full-day trek to the Tsaranoro summit itself. Paragliding over the valley is also an option if you book 48 hours ahead. Then comes the drive south across the Ihorombe plateau to Isalo National Park, where a 6-hour hike through canyons and mineral desert ends at a natural swimming pool fed by underground springs.
The final stretch takes you from Isalo down to Tulear and across to Ifaty, a small seaside village facing one of the world's largest lagoons. The Ranobe lagoon holds 46 types of coral and over 400 fish species across 40 kilometers of dive sites, with included visits to the baobab forest by zebu cart, Vezo fishing villages, and the Reniala reserve. Your last day offers a flight back to Antananarivo with time to visit Ambohimanga palace (the blue hill, a UNESCO World Heritage site and former royal residence) or the Old Town markets before your evening departure.

Is this one for you? This tour is shared (not private), so you travel with other guests and share meals and accommodation. The 15-day length and mix of cultural stays, mountain trekking and coastal time suit travelers who want depth in one region rather than a quick survey, and who have moderate to good fitness for multi-hour hikes on steep terrain and at altitude. The operator notes it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy. Children are welcome from age 3, though the hiking days will challenge younger walkers.
