The experience
The tour departs Antananarivo heading east on National Road N2 toward Andasibe, 140 kilometers away. On the first afternoon, you stop at Madagascar Exotic, a privately run reserve 75 kilometers from the capital where a guide walks you through large caged buildings and greenhouses to watch daily feedings of Coquerel's sifaka and photograph them close up. After dark, your guide collects you from your lodge and takes you to VOIMMA, a small protected rainforest parcel managed by a local guides association, for a night walk where you search for nocturnal wildlife.
Day two is built around Andasibe-Mantadia National Park, a 155-square-kilometer protected area in the tropical rainforest zone about 87 miles east of the capital. The park is known for its lemur species and rich biodiversity. Your guide takes you to Vakona Island, a private sanctuary a short walk from Vakona restaurant, where lemurs approach freely and you can observe their behavior and interact with them. The park's humid rainforest climate supports the wildlife you came to see, and the guide interprets what you encounter.
On day three, you return to Antananarivo with stops at two landmarks. The Manjakamiadana Rova, also called the Queen's Palace, sits at the highest point in the city and was the royal residence before French colonization. From here you get one of the best panoramic views of Antananarivo and its surroundings. Your second stop is Analakely, the bustling center of the capital, where the main train station and vibrant markets let you experience everyday life and sample local goods. The tour ends in the city.
