The experience

Fifteen days gives you time to move slowly through Madagascar's distinct regions without rushing between stops. You fly into Antananarivo, then head west to Morondava for sunrise and sunset at the Avenue of the Baobabs: ancient trees silhouetted against golden light. From there the route pushes inland to Kirindy Forest, where you photograph lemurs and chameleons in daylight, then return at night to capture nocturnal species. The guide knows which animals move where and when, so you're not searching blind.

The middle section takes you to Grand Tsingy de Bemaraha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of limestone formations that look like a stone forest. The rock shapes create natural frames and shadows. The guide helps you find angles that work. You also explore Petit Tsingy and the Manambolo River Gorge before heading back to the coast. Then it's inland again to Andasibe, where you walk Maromizaha Forest and Andasibe National Park photographing endemic lemurs in their habitat, visit Vakona Lemurs Island for close shots, and do a night walk to find mouse lemurs and other nocturnal animals.

The final stretch takes you by boat through Palmarium Reserve and the Pangalanes Canal: a scenic waterway lined with rural villages and wildlife. You get a rare chance to photograph the aye-aye, an elusive nocturnal lemur, on Aye Aye Island. A boat trip to Toamasina and a flight back to Antananarivo wrap the tour. Throughout, you stay in 3-star hotels, travel by 4x4 with a local guide, and all park entries and domestic flights are covered. The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or another language depending on your booking.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English, Spanish, French, German and Italian.

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What's the Avenue of the Baobabs like for photography?

The Avenue of the Baobabs is a natural corridor of massive ancient trees near Morondava. You photograph it at sunrise and sunset when the light turns golden and the trees cast long shadows. The guide takes you back twice during the tour to capture different light conditions and moods.

Can I photograph lemurs up close, or do I need a telephoto lens?

You get both kinds of shots. In Andasibe National Park and Maromizaha Forest, lemurs are active in trees at a distance, so a telephoto helps. At Vakona Lemurs Island, you get close enough for portrait shots without one. Night walks in Andasibe and on Aye Aye Island let you photograph nocturnal species like mouse lemurs and the aye-aye at closer range.

How much of the 15 days is actually spent traveling between locations?

Most days include a drive or flight to a new location, but the itinerary builds in full days at key sites: two days at Tsingy, three days in Andasibe, two days at Palmarium. Drives between towns offer their own photo opportunities. You stop along the way to photograph scenery and local life.

What's included in the price, and what do I pay separately?

The tour includes all park entry fees, domestic flights, 4x4 transport, accommodations and guide services. Lunch, drinks and gratuities are not included. The guide helps you find good restaurants. International flights to and from Madagascar are optional at checkout.

Do I need professional photography experience to join?

No. The tour is designed for photography enthusiasts at any level. The local guides give insider tips on composition, light and where to position yourself for the best shots. They know the wildlife behavior and the landscape, so you benefit from their knowledge whether you're a beginner or advanced.

What's the physical demand like over 15 days?

The tour involves regular walking in forests, national parks and along riverbanks, plus early starts for sunrise shoots and evening walks for nocturnal wildlife. You need moderate fitness for the terrain and pace. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy.
