The experience
You arrive at Ivato International Airport and are met by the tour team for transfer to your hotel in Antananarivo. The next morning, the drive south begins: 260 kilometers over roughly six hours to Ambositra, the wooden sculpture capital of the Central Highlands. Along the way you stop at an aluminum workshop in Ambatolampy, walk through Antsirabe's embroidery and gem-cutting studios, and browse Zafimaniry inlay work in Ambositra's specialized shops before settling into your hotel.
The following days push deeper into the highlands and toward the plateau. Day three takes you 204 kilometers through Fianarantsoa, the Betsileo ethnic capital, where you climb the old town to understand its history and can visit photographer Pierrot Men's studio. You'll also see a wild silk workshop and Antemoro papermaking studio in Ambalavao before nightfall. Day four covers 224 kilometers to Ranohira, crossing the vast Ihorombe plateau where herds of zebus cross the road and the landscape opens into something raw and mythical. At sunset, you reach the Window of Isalo: a vantage point over the massif's ruiniform rock sculptures that gives the park its Malagasy Colorado nickname.
Day five is devoted entirely to Isalo National Park on foot. You walk through canyons, past eroded statues sculpted by wind and water, and through vegetation found nowhere else on earth. The park holds lemurs, rare birds and reptiles. You'll see Bara and Sakalava tombs on the rocks and can swim in a natural pool before a picnic lunch in Namaza Canyon. The return journey takes you 264 kilometers west to Tulear, passing Mahafaly tombs decorated with zebu horns and aloalo funerary art, then north to Ifaty on the coast for a free afternoon. On the final day, a domestic flight returns you to Antananarivo for a tour of the city center and the UNESCO-listed royal palace of Ambohimanga before transfer to the airport.

Is this one for you? This tour suits travelers arriving in Antananarivo with a week to spend and no rental car. The guide handles the driving, the route is set, and you move through the highlands and down to the coast in a single arc. The full day in Isalo is what makes a real walk through the canyons possible instead of a quick stop. If you want more time on the coast or fewer hours in the car, a shorter version of this route would serve you better.

What's the actual hiking involved in Isalo National Park on day five?

Do I need to arrange my own flights to and from Madagascar?
