The Experience

The first thing I noticed in Madaba was the smell of fresh bread drifting out of a bakery as we walked to Saint George Church. Our driver, Fadi, pointed out the mosaic map inside — he said locals still come here just to see their city on the ancient floor. I tried tracing the Jordan River with my finger (probably not allowed, but no one minded). There was this quiet hum from people chatting in Arabic and a little boy selling postcards outside who grinned when I tried to say “shukran.”

Mount Nebo was windier than I expected — you could actually see the haze over the valley where they say Moses looked out. Fadi told us stories about pilgrims coming here for centuries. We stopped at a mosaic workshop nearby; I watched an older woman fit tiny colored stones into place with tweezers. She didn’t speak much English but smiled when I complimented her work (I think she understood). The drive between sites was longer than it looks on a map — about an hour each time — but honestly, it gave me time to let everything sink in.

The Dead Sea felt unreal. You walk down to the water and suddenly you’re floating without even trying — it’s weirdly peaceful, like your body forgets gravity for a while. The salt stings if you have any cuts (learned that fast), but the mud is supposed to be good for your skin so we all slathered it on anyway. Lunch was this open buffet at a hotel right by the shore; I piled my plate with hummus and something spicy I couldn’t name. Afterward, just sitting there with wet hair and salty skin watching families splash around… yeah, that’s what sticks with me most.
