Osaka Okonomiyaki Cooking Class: Make Pancakes & Takoyaki
Make two Osaka street foods from scratch and eat what you cook
This hands-on cooking class in central Osaka teaches you to prepare okonomiyaki (Japanese savory pancakes) and takoyaki (octopus-filled dough balls) over three hours. You'll spend 30 minutes on orientation and prep, 90 minutes cooking under instructor guidance, then an hour tasting and drinking what you've made, with sake and beer included for adults.
The experience
The kitchen sits five minutes on foot from both Shinsaibashi and Honmachi stations, in a quiet neighborhood despite its central location. You'll start with a 30-minute orientation covering ingredients and technique, then move into the cooking itself. The instructors (fluent in English, Japanese, and Spanish) walk you through each step as you build the batter for okonomiyaki, layer in your choice of fillings like pork or seafood, and fry takoyaki in the specialized molds that give them their shape. All tools, ingredients, and aprons come with the class. You bring only yourself.
After cooking, you sit down for an hour of tasting. The okonomiyaki arrives topped with sauce and bonito flakes. The takoyaki comes with sauce, bonito flakes, and seaweed powder. Adults get sake and beer alongside soft drinks. Travelers under 20 receive non-alcoholic options instead. This is the meal you made, eaten in the way locals eat it.
