The Experience

You're staying somewhere on Seven Mile Beach or the West End, and you've got a half-day free. The question is whether you want to see the reef from above the water or actually get in it. This tour does both — the glass bottom part is real, not a gimmick, and it happens first, so you get the lay of the reef before you're down in it with a mask on.

The boat picks you up right from your resort or meets you at a spot on the beach (if you're at the West End, Margaritaville works as a meeting point). Once you're out, the captain takes you to the best section of Coral Reef in Negril — and yeah, there's a difference between the spots tourists usually see and the ones locals know. You get about an hour in the water with snorkeling gear provided, and the captain actually points you toward where the fish are, not just drops you in and hopes. The visibility is usually good, and the reef itself isn't picked over; you'll see parrotfish, sergeant majors, the occasional grouper hanging around the coral heads.

After the snorkeling, the boat heads to Booby Cay Island — a small white-sand beach that's basically a sandbar with a few locals running a grill. They cook fish and lobster right there, and you can buy lunch if you want it, or just wade around and let your gear dry. It's not fancy, and that's the point. The whole thing wraps up when you head back to Seven Mile Beach, usually by early afternoon.
