The Experience
You start from your hotel beach in Negril or from Margaritaville—just walk to the sand and find the yellow boat, The Lucky Duck. The 15-minute ride out to the reef gives you the first view: the glass bottom lets you watch sea animals and plants pass underneath without getting wet. It's a way to see what's down there before you're in it.
At Med Reef (also called Anchor and Cannon reef), you spend an hour snorkeling with the gear provided. A guide takes you to the best spots where the schools of fish concentrate—trumpet fish, puffer fish, angel fish, starfish, different types of rays. On lucky days, sea turtles show up. The reef here is healthy and the visibility is what makes the difference between spotting a few fish and seeing the actual structure of the place.
After snorkeling, the boat takes you to Booby Cay Island for another hour. You can swim in the ocean, walk the beaches or buy fresh lobster and crab from vendors on the island—the seafood is locally caught and prepared while you're there. When the tour wraps, the boat returns you to your hotel or to Seven Mile Beach at Margaritaville. The whole thing, including travel time, runs about two and a half hours.
