Snorkel a sunken cannon, then eat lobster you watch being grilled

Snorkeling activity in Negril that combines reef exploration with a beachside lobster lunch on Booby Cay island. You're picked up from your hotel beach, snorkel at the reef and around a cannon sunk in battle, then spend the afternoon on an uninhabited island where the crew grills fresh lobster and jerk chicken over fire coal while you swim from shore or walk the sand. Cold beers, rum punch, water and lunch are included; the whole day runs about four hours.

The Experience

The boat picks you up directly from your hotel beach in Negril and heads straight to the reef. A crew member walks you through what you're seeing — the coral, the fish species, how they depend on each other — so the snorkeling becomes something you understand instead of just watch. You'll also dive down to a sunken cannon, a relic from the days when pirates, the Spanish and the English fought over Jamaica. The water is warm and the visibility is clear enough that the wreck sits right there in front of you.

After the reef work, the boat cruises to Booby Cay, an uninhabited island where you can walk around, rest, or snorkel again from the beach if you want more time in the water. While you're there, the crew grills fresh-caught lobster and jerk chicken over authentic fire coal, served with steam vegetables, rice and peas, and garlic sauce. Cold beers, rum punch, soda and water flow the whole time. If lobster season is closed (April 21 to June 30), they substitute sea crab, fish or shrimp instead. The meal is the centerpiece of the day — watching it cook and eating it on the island is the reason most people book this.

On the way back along Seven Mile Beach, the crew points out hotels, bars and restaurants worth visiting, so you get local tips without asking. The whole experience — snorkeling, the island, the meal, the drinks — takes about four hours. Pickup is from any beach in Negril; if you're staying inland, transport from your hotel can be arranged at checkout.

Is this one for you?The four-hour window means you can snorkel, eat a full lunch and be back at your hotel by early afternoon — short enough to fit around other plans, long enough that the meal isn't rushed and you're not watching the clock on the reef.

Top questions

What will I see when I snorkel at the reef in Negril?

The reef itself is the main draw — you'll see coral, tropical fish species, and learn from the crew how they live together. You'll also snorkel around a sunken cannon from the colonial era, which sits on the seafloor and is visible enough to explore up close.

Is the lobster lunch included in the price, or do I pay extra?

Lobster lunch, jerk chicken, vegetables, rice and peas, and all drinks — beers, rum punch, soda and water — are included in the activity price. There are no add-on charges for the meal.

What happens if lobster season is closed when I go?

Lobster season closes from April 21 to June 30 each year. During that time, the crew substitutes sea crab, fish or shrimp instead, prepared the same way over fire coal with the same sides and drinks.

Can I snorkel more after lunch on Booby Cay, or is the day over?

You have time to snorkel again from the island's shore after lunch if you want to. You can also walk around the uninhabited island or rest while you wait for the boat to head back to your hotel.

Where does the boat pick me up and drop me off?

Pickup is from your hotel beach anywhere in Negril. If you're staying inland away from the beach, you can arrange transport from your hotel at checkout. The boat returns you to the same beach pickup point.
