The experience
Montego Bay's coral reefs sit in relatively shallow, calm water: the reason this dive works for first-timers. A PADI-certified instructor meets you, fits your scuba gear, and walks you through the basics on land: how to breathe through the regulator, how to clear water from your mask, what to do if something feels wrong. You're not rushing through theory. The instructor answers questions and makes sure you're ready before you enter the water.
Once in the water, you practice those skills in shallow depth where you can stand up if you need to. The instructor stays close and watches for any sign you're uncomfortable. After you've got the feel of breathing underwater and moving in the gear, you have free time to acclimate. Just floating, getting used to the sensation, watching how your body moves differently down there. Then the guided dive begins: you descend to the reef on your own air, following the instructor as you swim among coral formations, urchins, anemones, black corals, lobster, sponge eels, barracuda, stingrays, nurse sharks, snappers, seahorses, and octopus. One tank means one dive, not a series of dives. The whole experience (instruction, practice, and the open water dive) fits into about three hours.
All scuba equipment is provided, along with bottled water. Public transportation options are available nearby if you're arranging your own way there. Pickup can be arranged for an additional fee. The activity requires at least a moderate level of physical fitness and is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnancy.
