The experience

You leave Salerno at 9 am on a 10-metre gozzo, a boat built for comfort and speed. The cabin has a full-height bathroom, the bow is wide enough to lie down and sunbathe, and the skipper knows every cave, cove and current along this stretch of coast. As you motor slowly east, he points out the history woven into the cliffs (legend and fact mixed together), while you settle in with a drink or snack. The first hours are about the water itself: the skipper stops at caves like Pandora, il Salto delle Vergini and grotta Africana, and you swim, snorkel or simply float and take pictures. The water changes color and temperature as you approach small freshwater waterfalls that pour down the rocks, places most visitors never see because they are only reachable from the sea.

Around midday the boat anchors near Conca dei Marini, a fishing village accessible only by water. You can eat on board (sandwiches available for €5 per person, ordered in advance) or wade ashore to a restaurant on the beach and order fresh fish at your own expense. After lunch, you continue at an easy pace toward Amalfi, where you go ashore to walk around the cathedral, the Duomo, and explore the town on foot. The afternoon takes you to the Fjord of Furore, a narrow beach wedged between rocks that rise 250 metres above the water (the whole thing carved out over centuries by a torrent), then to Praiano, where the sea is clear and the rock formations are unlike anywhere else on the coast. The day ends in Positano, a town of color and flowers where you can shop and walk the streets, or stay on board for final swims near small beaches only the boat can reach.

The boat is approved for 11 passengers, which keeps the group small and the pace unhurried. Bottled water, snacks and a towel are included. The skipper speaks English, Spanish, Italian or French depending on the group. You return to Salerno at 6 pm.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you have a full day free and want to see the Amalfi Coast from the water rather than from the road. The small group size and private boat mean you stop where the skipper knows the best caves and swimming spots, and the 9 am departure gives you time to reach Salerno from nearby towns the night before.
