Herculano's ruins and Vesuvius views on the way to Sorrento's cliffs

This guided day trip departs Naples with hotel pickup and travels to Sorrento via Herculano and Torre del Greco, with photo stops at the volcano and a panoramic terrace overlooking the coast. You get four hours free in Sorrento to explore the historic center, taste limoncello, swim, or eat—then return to Naples as the sun sets. An English, Spanish, Italian or French-speaking guide leads the route in an air-conditioned vehicle.

The Experience

The tour starts with pickup from your Naples hotel and heads south in a comfortable vehicle toward the Sorrentina Peninsula. The first stop is Herculano, where you pause to photograph the excavations—the Roman city buried by Vesuvius alongside Pompeii—and get views of the volcano itself rising across the bay. From there the route continues to Torre del Greco, famous for its coral carving workshops, with another photo stop at a panoramic terrace that frames the coast and the mountain before you drop down toward Sorrento.

After roughly an hour of travel, you arrive in Sorrento and the guide steps back. You have four hours to move at your own pace through the narrow alleys of the historic center, visit the Cathedral, explore the Necropolis of Sottomonte, or simply sit with an espresso and limoncello tasting in one of the cafés. Some travelers use the time for a swim on the beaches below the cliffs; others linger over gnocchi alla sorrentina, the local pasta specialty. There is no schedule to keep.

The return journey to Naples follows the same coastal route, and the itinerary notes that the sunset accompanies you back to your starting point. The vehicle is air-conditioned throughout, and the guide travels with the group but does not narrate the free time in Sorrento—that stretch is yours alone.

Top questions

What is Herculano and why do we stop there?

Herculano is a Roman city preserved by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, similar to Pompeii. The tour includes a photo stop at the excavations so you can see the ruins and the volcano across the landscape.

How much time do I actually have in Sorrento?

You get four hours of free time in Sorrento after arrival. That is enough to walk the historic center, visit the Cathedral or Necropolis, swim, eat lunch, or taste limoncello—but not all of them.

Is the guide with me the whole time in Sorrento?

No. The guide brings the group to Sorrento and then you are free to explore on your own. The guide does not accompany you during the four-hour stop.

What is Torre del Greco known for?

Torre del Greco is famous for coral carving and coral jewelry workshops. The tour passes through the city and stops for photos, so you see the coastal setting where this craft tradition developed.

Can I see Vesuvius from this tour?

Yes. You see Vesuvius from the road during the drive, particularly from the photo stop near Herculano. The volcano is visible across the bay, but this tour does not include a stop at the volcano itself or a climb.

What language is the guide?

The guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, or French depending on the group. Confirm your language preference when you book.
