The Experience

Most people see Pompeii from a guidebook or a screen. You'll walk through it. The difference hits you the moment you step off the minibus at the archaeological site — the Forum spreads in front of you, real stone underfoot, and your archaeologist guide starts pointing out the Temple of Jupiter with Vesuvius rising behind it, the same view Romans saw 2,000 years ago before everything changed. The 2-hour guided walk takes you through the main structures: the Capitolium, the Macellum where locals bought groceries, the Stabian Baths where people gathered to talk politics and gossip, even the Lupanare with its frescoes still visible on the walls. You're not rushing through — the guide explains what each building was, how people lived, what the eruption of 79 A.D. preserved in ash.

Then you get back in the minibus and drive up to Mount Vesuvius itself, arriving at 1000 meters elevation. An alpine guide takes over from there, and you climb the rest of the way to the crater rim. The walk isn't long, but the altitude and the slope mean you're working a bit — and then you're standing at the edge looking down into the crater, with the Gulf of Naples spread out below and the coast where you started this morning visible in the distance. You have free time up there to just stand and take it in, or sit and think about the fact that you spent your morning in a city this volcano destroyed, and your afternoon looking back at what it did.

The whole day runs early afternoon return to Sorrento, so you're back at your hotel or the meeting point (Kontatto Bar on Corso Italia if you're not picked up directly) with the rest of your day still ahead. Hotel pickup is included, which saves the step of finding your way to a meeting point in a town you might not know yet. The minibus holds a small group, not a coach full of people, and both guides — the archaeologist and the alpine guide — speak multiple languages.
