Lambrusco tastes different when you've walked the vineyard it came from.

A guided tour of Tenuta Cialdini, the Chiarli family winery in Modena's Castelvero hills, takes you through the vineyards and production facilities, then sits you down to taste four wines from the Cleto Chiarli line with local cheese, cured meat and balsamic vinegar. The visit runs about 90 minutes and includes a guide in English or Italian. The estate has operated for over 140 years and sits on more than 50 hectares of Lambrusco Grasparossa vineyards.

Step-by-step itinerary

Guided tour and wine tasting

  • Welcome at Tenuta Villa Cialdini
  • Tour vineyards and winery
  • Learn winemaking stages
  • Taste four Cleto Chiarli wines
  • Enjoy salami, breadsticks, and cheese

The Experience

What makes this winery different is that you start outside. The tour begins in the vineyards themselves—the same rows that wrap around the villa, the stables and the production buildings—so you see the land before you see what it makes. A guide walks you through the rows and explains what grows there and why, then moves into the cellar and winemaking facilities to show you the stages that turn those grapes into the bottles you'll taste.

The tasting comes last, after you've walked the property. Four wines from the Cleto Chiarli line are poured, and they arrive with salami, breadsticks and Parmigiano Reggiano dressed with drops of Modena balsamic vinegar—the pairing is simple and deliberate, built to let the wine speak. The whole experience takes about an hour and a half. The estate includes a nineteenth-century villa and restored stables that anchor the property, plus a shop where you can buy bottles to take home.

The location matters if you don't have a car. Tenuta Cialdini sits a few kilometers outside the village of Castelvetro di Modena, in the hills where Lambrusco Grasparossa grows. The guide is available in English or Italian, so the tour works whether you speak either language.

Is this one for you?The estate sits outside Castelvetro di Modena, a few kilometers from the village, so if you're staying in Modena city or don't have a car, you'll need to arrange transport there and back—but that also means the tour itself is self-contained and you don't have to navigate between stops or time your own day around opening hours.
