The cave's water shifts from cobalt to emerald green as light filters through the rocks.

A boat tour to the Emerald Grotto, discovered in 1932, combines a visit to the sea cave with a walk through Tenuta Campitiello's terraced olive groves on the Amalfi Coast. After exploring the cave's columns and stalactites, you picnic surrounded by olive trees, tasting local cheeses and cured meats from the Lattari Mountains, toasted bread from Agerola, anchovies from Cetara, and sfogliatella from Santa Rosa, paired with wine from Marisa Cuomo winery and the estate's PDO extra virgin olive oil.

Step-by-step itinerary

Visit Emerald Grotto and picnic

  • Boat trip to Emerald Grotto
  • Explore the cave's light colors
  • Walk in Tenuta Campitiello landscape
  • Picnic in olive grove with local foods

The experience

The Emerald Grotto sits about 30 meters wide, its entrance unremarkable until you step inside and the water's color takes over: cobalt blue shifting to turquoise, then green, finally the emerald that gives the cave its name. Stalactites and stalagmites rise from the floor and hang from the ceiling, their shapes carved over millennia. A local fisherman, Luigi Buonocore, found the cave in 1932, and it remains one of the few sea caves still open to visitors on the Amalfi Coast.

After the grotto, you walk into Tenuta Campitiello's landscape of rocky terraces planted with olive trees, the typical rural setting of this stretch of coast. The picnic happens in the grove itself, surrounded by the trees that produce the oil you'll taste. The basket includes cold cuts and cheeses from the Monti Lattari mountains, toasted bread baked in Agerola, anchovies from Cetara, and sfogliatella from Santa Rosa. One bottle of wine from Marisa Cuomo winery and one bottle of water come with the meal, along with an Emerald Spritz to start.

The tour runs about two hours total. Children are welcome from age 8. Your guide speaks English, Italian or German, and parking for cars and motorbikes is included.
