The Experience

I nearly tripped over my own feet right at the start in Bomerano — classic me, trying to look casual while checking if my shoes were “good enough” for this Path of the Gods hike. Enzo, our guide (white hat, huge grin), spotted it and just laughed: “No flip flops? Then you’ll survive.” He gave us a quick rundown about what to expect — lots of up and down, 7 km or so, nothing too wild if you’re moderately fit. I was already sweating a bit but pretending not to notice.

The first stretch out of Agerola felt like walking through someone’s garden, rosemary in the air and that dry stone underfoot. Enzo kept pointing out wildflowers I’d never have noticed — he knows every plant by name (and sometimes in Latin, which made us all giggle). The path opens up fast: suddenly there’s all this light and you see Capri floating way off in the blue haze. Somewhere along a rocky bend we heard goat bells clanking below; I still wonder how they don’t fall off those cliffs.

There were moments when I just stopped talking — partly because I was out of breath, but also because it’s hard to describe that view over Positano. Enzo told stories about old shepherds and how people used to cross these trails before cars existed. At one point he handed me a piece of wild fennel to smell; it stuck on my fingers for ages. Someone asked about team-building groups and he shrugged: “Sure, as long as nobody wears sandals.”

The last bit into Nocelle is mostly downhill (my knees complained), but then there’s this tiny bar where they hand you an icy lemon slush — honestly, after three hours hiking under that Mediterranean sun, it tastes like magic. We all sat around quietly for a minute just sipping and watching the sea turn gold. After that you’re free to wander down into Positano or just linger up there. I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck on the subway back home.
