The experience

You get picked up at your hotel and ride south on a classic Vespa with your guide leading the way. The route hugs the coast, so you're seeing the Bay of Naples and Capri across the water, then the cliffs start climbing and the road narrows into the famous switchbacks. Sorrento sits behind you. Ahead is Positano, the pastel-colored fishing village that cascades down the mountainside in a tangle of restaurants, shops and hotels built into the rock. You stop to walk through it on foot, then settle in for cake and coffee an hour into the ride before heading toward Amalfi.

The Vespa carries you through Praiano and past the Furore Fjord, where the road opens onto views that make you want to stop and stare. At the Emerald Grotto, you leave the scooter and board a small boat to see the cave's water lit from below. The color shift happens because of the way light hits the underwater opening. Then it's on to Amalfi, where the Cathedral of S. Andrea dominates the main square and the narrow streets around it fill with shops, bars and the hum of a working Italian town.
