Step-by-step itinerary
Wine and cheese tasting in Irpinia
- Visit vineyard and cellar
- Taste three DOCG wines
- Visit cheese factory
- Taste ricotta, mozzarella, caciocavallo
- Visit salami factory
The experience
This tour trades the well-known Chianti and Montalcino routes for Irpinia, a smaller wine region in Campania where the driver doubles as a sommelier. That matters: instead of being driven to a tasting room, you walk through the vineyard itself, touch the grapes, and taste wines where they're made. At the winery, you taste three glasses (Fiano di Avellino DOCG, Greco di Tufo DOCG, and Taurasi DOCG), and the sommelier opens an oak barrel so you can smell the wine before it's ready to drink.
The cheese factory comes next, set up like a working farm where you watch ricotta, mozzarella and caciocavallo being produced in real time. You taste each one. The final stop is a salami factory to see how Irpinia's prosciutto, considered the best in Campania, is made. Throughout the day you travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with WiFi, and the driver speaks English or Italian.
The tour runs 8 hours from your hotel in Positano, Praiano or Amalfi. Pickup is included. Bring an appetite: the tastings are substantial, though lunch itself is not part of the itinerary. A vegetarian option is available if you request it when booking.

Is this one for you?Eight hours is a full afternoon and evening, so plan this for a day when you're not splitting time between other coastal stops. The sommelier-driver format means you get explanation alongside every tasting rather than a standard winery visit, which works best if you're interested in how the wines are made, not just the flavors.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Italian.
What wines do I taste on the Irpinia tour?
You taste three DOCG wines: Fiano di Avellino, Greco di Tufo, and Taurasi. The sommelier pours them in the vineyard and also opens an oak barrel to let you smell wine still aging inside.
Do I watch the cheese and salami being made, or just taste the finished products?
You watch live production at both the cheese factory and the salami factory. At the dairy you see ricotta, mozzarella and caciocavallo being made, then taste each one. At the salami factory you observe how the prosciutto is produced.
Is lunch included in the 8-hour tour?
Lunch is not included, but the food tastings (three cheeses and two types of salami, plus three glasses of wine) are substantial. You can eat in the region if you want a full meal, or the driver can advise on options nearby.
What if I'm vegetarian?
A vegetarian option is available. Let the operator know when you book so they can arrange the tour around plant-based tastings instead of the salami and prosciutto stops.
