The experience

The boat leaves from either Sorrento or Positano depending on which option you pick, and the route itself is part of the day. From Sorrento, you cruise past the fishing village of Massa Lubrense and the bay of Puolo on the way to Capri. From Positano, the boat follows the coastline through Nerano before arriving at the island. Once there, the captain takes you to four sea caves (the White Grotto, Green Grotto, Blue Grotto and Coral cave), stopping at each one so you can see them from the water. The Faraglioni rocks, Capri's three stacked stone pillars, are another boat stop.

The Blue Grotto is the most famous stop, but entry requires an extra payment made directly to the boatman on site, and the cave closes without notice if weather turns or conditions shift. Something the operator cannot control. Plan for up to 30 minutes of waiting to get inside. Before that, you'll have time to swim and snorkel at designated stops along the way. Snorkeling equipment is provided, and the water temperature and visibility vary by season.

That time is yours to walk the town, sit at a waterfront café, or explore the shops and narrow streets: no guide, no schedule. Bottled water, snacks and life jackets are on board throughout the day.
