The Experience

“You ever tasted real limoncello out at sea?” That’s how our skipper, Luca, started things as we pushed off from Marina Piccola. I was still fiddling with my towel when the boat engine hummed to life—honestly, I didn’t expect the water to be that clear or that blue. There were just six of us, so it felt more like tagging along with friends than being herded around. The air smelled faintly salty and sweet (maybe from all those lemon groves inland?), and someone behind me kept laughing every time we bounced over a wave.

Luca pointed out the White Grotto first—stalactites hanging like icicles above us. He told this story about fishermen using these caves for shelter centuries ago, which made me imagine what it’d be like hiding here during a storm. We stopped for a swim near the Faraglioni rocks—the famous ones you see in all those old postcards. The water was cold at first but then perfect once you got used to it.
