Apicella Winery Amalfi Wine Tasting Vineyard Walk
The Apicella vineyard has been standing since before phylloxera wiped out European vines.
Wine tasting at Apicella winery in Tramonti, Amalfi Coast, combines a walk through the family's historic prephylloxera vineyard with a cellar tour and tasting of wines in production, paired with local cheeses, cured meats and toasted bread. The experience runs about two hours and begins at 11:30 with a five-minute walk from the cellar to the vineyard. A live guide leads the tasting in English, Italian, French, German or another language.
The Experience
What makes Apicella stand out on the Amalfi Coast is the vineyard itself. The A' Scrapata pergola predates the phylloxera crisis that reshaped European viticulture in the late 1800s, and the Apicella family has worked this land for generations. Giuseppe Apicella bottled the first vintage under his own label in 1977—around 3,000 bottles of Tramonti red—and the winery has built three decades of success on that foundation. The operation balances traditional methods with a restrained style that lets the terroir speak.
The tasting begins with a walk uphill to the vineyard, a five-minute climb on foot from the cellar. You move through the pergola itself, seeing how the vines grow and how the landscape shapes what ends up in the bottle. Then you return to the cellar for the production tour: the guide walks you through fermentation of both red and white wines, stabilization and aging—the mechanics of how raw grapes become what you are about to taste. The wines in production are tasted alongside typical Tramontini products: local cheeses, cured meats and toasted bread that anchor the flavors.
