The experience
Amalfi is your starting point. The driver picks you up and takes you inland toward Pompeii, where the ancient Roman city sits frozen in ash from the AD 79 eruption. Your entrance ticket is included, and you explore at your own pace: walking the streets where Romans lived, viewing the intricate mosaics in the public baths, the House of the Faun with its Hellenistic design, and the frescoed Villa of the Mysteries. Without a car or local knowledge, this beats navigating the site alone or joining a crowded group tour.
After Pompeii, you drive to a family winery on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, within the Vesuvius National Park. A walk through 16 hectares of vineyards opens onto views of the Gulf of Naples, Sorrento and Capri. The winery entrance is included. You taste regional wines, including selections from the renowned Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio, paired with a Mediterranean lunch of local Italian dishes. The whole experience (from the archaeological site to the vineyard to the table) stays private, so the pace and conversation stay yours.
The driver returns you to Amalfi at the end of the day. If you want deeper context at Pompeii, you can book a private guide for two hours at an extra cost. Otherwise, the self-paced walk lets you linger on what catches your eye.
