Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore Ubud's culture and nature

  • Visit Bali Batuan Temple
  • See Tegenungan Waterfall
  • Walk Tegallalang Rice Terraces
  • Experience Bali Swing at D'Alas
  • Explore Ubud Monkey Forest
  • Shop at Ubud Art Market
  • Visit Puri Saren Ubud Palace

Is it possible to see so much of Ubud in one day without feeling rushed? That’s what I wondered as our driver Wayan greeted us outside our hotel—he had this easy smile and a way of making you feel like you’d known him for ages. First stop: Batuan Temple. The air was thick with incense and something sweet I couldn’t quite place. Wayan explained how the black palm roofs are made (I forgot the name instantly), but mostly I just watched locals arranging tiny offerings at the entrance, moving quietly in the morning light.

I didn’t expect Tegenungan Waterfall to be so loud—the kind of roar that makes you shout over it. We climbed down a bunch of steps (my legs complained) and felt the spray on our faces. It was busy but not chaotic, families splashing around, someone selling coconuts nearby. After drying off we drove towards Tegalalang Rice Terrace. The green there is unreal—almost too much for your eyes at first—and there’s this gentle hum from insects you only notice when you stop talking. Wayan told us about subak irrigation; I pretended to understand more than I did.

The Bali Swing at D’Alas looked terrifying but somehow I ended up doing it anyway—my hands were shaking and my laugh probably echoed through the trees. Lunch was simple rice and vegetables overlooking the paddies; honestly, I’d go back just for that view. Later we wandered through the Ubud Monkey Forest where monkeys darted everywhere (one tried to steal my water bottle). There’s a weird peace among all that chaos—maybe it’s the shade or just how old everything feels.

We ended at Ubud Art Market and Palace, both right in town. The market was noisy, full of bargaining and bright cloths; I bought a carved wooden frog after haggling badly (the vendor smiled like she knew she’d won). The Palace across the road felt quiet by comparison—carvings everywhere, kids playing in the courtyard. By then my feet hurt but my head felt strangely clear. Still thinking about those rice terraces now—you know?
