The Experience
The driver picks you up from your hotel in Seminyak, Canggu, Kuta, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua or Sanur and drives roughly 90 minutes into Ubud. The first stop is the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, where around 700 Balinese long-tailed macaques live among three temples in the forest. You walk through the sanctuary and see how the monkeys and local people share the space—the animals are accustomed to visitors but still wild, so the guide explains the rules and the layout before you enter.
From there you head to Tegalalang Rice Terraces, the steeply carved rice fields that drop into a valley in tight, curved rows. The terraces still use the traditional Balinese irrigation system called Subak, which channels water downhill through channels and gates. You have time to walk among the paddies and photograph the geometry of the landscape. Lunch follows at a bamboo restaurant with views into the jungle, with Indonesian, Balinese and Western options on the menu.
The afternoon includes Ulu Petanu Waterfall, a smaller cascade where the water is clean enough to swim in if you want to cool off, and time for photos. The final stop is Tirta Empul Temple, a water temple built around natural springs. The temple grounds have pools where locals and visitors bathe in the holy water, which is believed to grant wishes—you can wade in if you choose, or simply walk the grounds and see the architecture and the spring-fed pools. The driver then takes you back to your hotel, another 90 minutes south.

Is this one for you?Choose the option with entry fees included if you want to move through all four sites without stopping to pay cash at each one; pick the private tour if you'd rather set your own pace at each stop instead of staying with a group. The nine-hour commitment works best if you're based in South Bali and want to see Ubud's main attractions in a single day without renting a vehicle or navigating the roads yourself.
