The Experience

Hands still a little shaky from the swing, I was laughing with our guide Wayan before I even realized how much I’d needed that. He’d just snapped a photo of me—hair everywhere, feet dangling over all that green at Tegalalang Rice Terrace—and I could hear someone roasting coffee in the distance. The air here smells different, like wet leaves and something sweet I couldn’t place. We’d started the day dodging cheeky monkeys in Ubud’s Sacred Monkey Forest (one tried to grab my water bottle—Wayan said they’re basically locals), but it was the quiet parts between stops that stuck with me most.

Gunung Kawi Temple felt older than anything I’ve ever seen—moss climbing up the stone shrines, water trickling somewhere out of sight. Wayan told us about Rsi Markandeya and how people still come for blessings; he showed us how to tie a sarong properly (I got it wrong twice). There were koi flickering under the surface of these pools and families lighting incense. It wasn’t crowded at all. Afterward, we stopped in Tampaksiring for coffee tasting—Balinese coffee is strong enough to wake anyone up, but their ginger tea was my favorite. The view over the valley was just…quiet. Not dramatic or anything, just peaceful in a way you don’t get back home.

Tegenungan Waterfall came last. You hear it before you see it—sort of a low roar under everything else. The steps down are steep but not too bad if you take your time (my knees complained a bit). Down by the pool, mist on my face and shoes full of sand, I remember thinking I hadn’t felt this awake in months. Wayan waited patiently while we took photos from every possible angle—even offered to hold my bag when I got too close to the spray. If you’re looking for a private guided tour of Ubud that actually gives you space to breathe—and doesn’t rush you past what matters—I’d say this is it.
