The experience
The Blue Lagoon sits about five minutes from Padang Bai on Bali's eastern coast, sheltered enough that the water stays calm year-round. You get a mask, fins and life jacket. A professional snorkeling instructor leads two separate sessions across different parts of the reef so you see more of what lives there. The sandy bottom and shallow depth make it a natural choice for families and first-time snorkelers, and the reef itself is one of Bali's established coral systems. If you're interested in macro underwater photography, the lagoon's clear water and stationary subjects work well for it.
After snorkeling, you shower and change at the facility, then head to lunch at a restaurant where you can sit down and recover before the inland portion begins. The drive takes you through Celuk Village (gold and silversmith work) and Mas Village (wood carving), then stops at Tegalalang Rice Terraces, where the paddies drop away in layered steps down the valley slopes. The roadside location is high and breezy, built for photographs. Next is the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, a 27-acre reserve in the village of Padangtegal that holds over 400 long-tailed macaques divided into four groups. The site draws upwards of 10,000 visitors each month and carries spiritual and cultural weight for the area. Ubud Palace (Puri Saren Ubud) stands on the main road through town and serves as the focal landmark of Ubud. It was built in the early 1800s and remains a standard stop on any Ubud itinerary. Your final stop is Tegenungan Waterfall, which drops about 20 meters over green rocky walls along the Petanu River. Local food stalls operate at the first viewing point.
Your driver speaks English and acts as guide throughout the day. The vehicle is air-conditioned and private to your group only: no other travelers share the van. Pickup happens at 8:00 AM from your hotel or villa in Seminyak, Canggu, Kuta, Legian, Jimbaran, Sanur, Nusa Dua, Tanjung Benoa, Uluwatu, Ubud or Denpasar. An Indonesian set menu lunch is included. Vegetarian options are available if you request them at booking. All entrance fees and taxes are covered.
