The experience
The day starts at 9am and runs about six hours total. A fast boat takes roughly 40 minutes to reach Menjangan Island, which sits in the northwest corner of Bali as part of the Taman National Bali Barat marine reserve. Between the two dives, you get lunch, fruit, water and drinks on the boat. The return lands you back between 2 and 3pm.
Menjangan's dive sites center on underwater walls and dense coral growth. The Gorgonian sea fans (tall, branching corals) are what set the island apart. Pygmy seahorses live among them, and turtles are regular visitors to the sites. Water visibility is generally excellent, and the conditions suit divers of all levels. Your local guide, who speaks English, German or Dutch, knows where to find the marine life and leads both dives.
You'll need proof of current diving certification to book. The marine park fee (225,000 IDR on normal days, 325,000 IDR on Sundays and public holidays) is paid in cash when you arrive. If you want to rent a full set of dive equipment with a dive computer, that's available at checkout.
