The Experience

The boat leaves Pemuteran Beach at 9am and heads straight to Menjangan Island, a protected marine reserve inside Barat National Park. You get two snorkeling sessions around the island's reefs, each one guided. The boat itself is built for the day: it has a toilet on board, a sun roof for shade, and enough open deck space to dry off and watch the Java volcanoes across the water between snorkeling stops. Coffee, tea and water are available throughout.

Snorkeling equipment—mask, fins, wetsuit if you want one—is provided and fitted for you. The guide enters the water with your group and shows you the reef. Lunch is a box meal served on the boat after the second snorkel. The five-hour trip includes park entry fees, so there is nothing else to arrange once you board.

Children from age one can join. The operator notes the activity is not recommended for people with poor cardiovascular health, but it suits all other fitness levels. Guides are multilingual and certified; the staff speak English, Portuguese, French and German.
