Lunch, fruit, water and snorkeling gear are included; the marine park fee (IDR 215,000 per person, plus IDR 100,000 on Sundays and public holidays) is paid in cash on arrival.

The Experience

You leave Pemuteran at 9am and spend about 40 minutes on a fast boat to reach Menjangan Island. The boat is built for the crossing — efficient and steady — so the ride itself is part of the day rather than something to endure. Once you arrive, the water is calm and sheltered, the kind of condition that lets you focus on what's below instead of fighting the surface. A local guide leads both snorkel sessions, each an hour long, and takes you to the spots where the coral is densest and the fish schools are thickest. The shallows here are deep enough to be interesting but shallow enough that you stay comfortable the whole time.

The visibility in these waters is among the best Bali offers — you'll see the reef structure clearly and spot fish at a distance instead of having them appear suddenly. The coral growth is protected as part of the national park, so what you're looking at has had time to recover and thicken. Between the two snorkel sessions, there's time to rest on the boat. Lunch, fruit, water and drinks are provided, so you're not managing hunger or thirst in the middle of the day. The boat brings you back to Pemuteran between 2 and 3 in the afternoon, which leaves the rest of your day open.

Snorkeling equipment — mask, fins, snorkel and wetsuit if you need one — comes with the trip, as does a towel. The guide speaks English, German or Dutch, so the reef and what lives in it get explained as you go. You need to be at least 18 years old, and the activity suits all fitness levels, though it does involve time in the water and some swimming. The marine park fee is paid in cash when you arrive at the island.
