Step-by-step itinerary
Jungle trekking and rafting experience
- Start trek from Bukit Lawang at 9 AM
- Walk into Gunung Leuser National Park
- Observe orangutans, monkeys, and birds
- Enjoy fresh fruit snacks and lunch
- Take traditional rafting on Bahorok River
- Return to Bukit Lawang
The experience
The trek starts around 9am from Bukit Lawang with a short walk to enter the jungle proper. Your guide shares information about the rainforest and its animals as you move through it, giving you time to watch for orangutans, gibbons, siamang, several monkey species, and rare birds like hornbill. The pace lets you observe without rushing, and the guide's knowledge shapes what you notice: the calls overhead, the movement in the canopy, the plants the animals depend on.
Fresh fruit snacks and lunch are provided during the trek, along with drinking water. The six to seven hours on foot covers the rainforest itself, moving through habitat where these animals live wild. At the end of the day, you board a traditional raft for the return trip down the Bahorok River to Bukit Lawang, floating past jungle scenery and waterfalls as the light changes.
All permit fees for Gunung Leuser National Park are included, so there's no separate entry to arrange. Hotel pickup is included in at least one option, and public transportation options are available nearby if you prefer to meet the guide at Bukit Lawang instead. The trek suits all fitness levels, though it is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.
