The experience
Kintamani Batur Volcano anchors the first day. You start with hotel pickup in an air-conditioned car, then watch the Barong and Keris dance performance, which tells the story of good versus evil from the Mahabrata Epic. After visiting silversmith and wood carver artisan villages in Batuan and Mas, you reach the spice garden in Temen village, where locals show how they make coffee the traditional way and you taste it fresh. The volcano itself comes at midday. You see the crater lake from the viewpoint while eating Indonesian buffet lunch at a local restaurant overlooking the caldera.
The route weaves through water and rice. After lunch you visit Pura Sebatu, a spring temple with lush gardens where you can feed the sacred fish, then stop at Tegalalang Rice Terrace for photos of the stepped paddies north of Ubud. The afternoon takes you to Ubud's art market and palace, and the day ends with BBQ seafood dinner on the sand at Jimbaran Bay with views across the water. If Jimbaran is closed, your guide takes you to another local restaurant instead.
Day two moves to the western temples and lakes. After breakfast, you visit Taman Ayun, the royal family temple of Mengwi Kingdom, then have buffet lunch in Bedugul while looking out over Beratan Lake. Ulun Danu Beratan Temple, dedicated to the goddess of the lake, comes next, followed by a stop at Gobleg Hill to see the twin lakes of Buyan and Tamblingan surrounded by rainforest. The day closes at Tanah Lot, the sea temple set against the Indian Ocean. You have time to walk both the west and east sides and stay through sunset if you choose. A final stop at Bedugul Market, a local fruit and vegetable market, gives you a chance to photograph the colorful stalls before dinner with an ocean view near Tanah Lot.
Is this one for you?Two days is the span that fits the volcano, the northern temples and the coastal temple into one trip without rushing the stops. A single day would skip either the highlands or the coast. A longer tour adds sites beyond Bali's most recognizable landmarks.
