The experience
Two days is enough to move through Bali's central highlands and coastal temples without rushing. Day one starts from your villa and heads inland to Tegenungan Waterfall, where the falls drop between green rocky walls and local stalls line the viewing area. From there the route climbs to Tirta Empul Temple, a spring-fed complex in the village of Manukaya built around a legendary tale of good versus evil. The drive continues to Kintamani, where the caldera of Mount Batur and Lake Batur fill the view across 13 square kilometers. The winding road along the lake shore is the main reason people linger here. On the way back down you stop at Tegalalang Rice Terrace, a roadside vantage point where the terraced slopes spread across the valley in front of you, and then move into Ubud to see the Royal Palace on the main road, walk the Ubud Art Market for handicrafts and paintings, and visit the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, which occupies 27 acres and is home to over 400 long-tailed macaques divided into four groups.
Day two turns west and south toward the coast. Taman Ayun Temple, the mother temple of Mengwi, comes first, its towering tiers a gesture of reverence to deified ancestors. Then Tanah Lot Temple, the ancient Hindu shrine perched on an outcrop surrounded by crashing waves, sits on the onshore site with smaller shrines, restaurants, and a cultural park where Kecak dance performances run regularly. The afternoon moves to Uluwatu Temple, which rises 70 meters above sea level on a steep cliff and is one of six key temples believed to be Bali's spiritual pillars. A Kecak and fire dance performance happens at the temple, and the sunset backdrop is the draw. The day ends with a seafood dinner in Jimbaran Bay, where grilled fish and shellfish come under the sunset panorama. The bay sits ten minutes from the airport and the local government has upgraded the seafood restaurants to a more formal standard.
Your guide is an English speaker who drives the private air-conditioned car and knows the stories behind each stop. The itinerary is flexible and can shift based on what you want. Lunch appears twice across the two days and dinner once, all included. Entry to every temple and the Kecak dance ticket come with the booking, as do taxes and service charges. The only things you arrange separately are your own hotel accommodation and any personal expenses.
