The experience
The hike starts in the afternoon from Toya Bungkah village at the base, climbing a moderate route across the crater rim to the campsite. Your guides handle every piece of equipment. They haul it up, set up your tent, and bring it all back down. You carry nothing but yourself and water. By the time you reach the summit, the sun is already low, and you settle in to watch it sink over the western sky while your guides prepare dinner. The meal comes with coffee, tea and bottled water, all served at altitude as the light fades.
You sleep in the tent at the campsite and wake before dawn. The sunrise over the eastern sky and ocean happens fast, and your guides have breakfast ready: cooked over steam venting from the volcano itself, not a camp stove. After eating, you descend the same route back to the village. The hike down is just as scenic, crossing the crater rim again and dropping through the volcanic landscape. At the bottom, you stop at the natural hot springs to soak and recover, then your English-speaking driver takes you back to your hotel.
Is this one for you?Your guides do all the camp work (pitching the tent, cooking, carrying gear), so you hike and rest without logistics. This suits anyone who wants to see both sunset and sunrise from a volcano but doesn't own camping gear or want to manage it on a mountain.
