The Experience

Hands wrapped around a mug of sweet Balinese coffee, I tried to wake up as the jeep bounced higher into Kintamani’s dark hills. Our driver, Wayan, barely seemed to notice the potholes — he just grinned and turned up the radio a notch. It was 4:30 am but somehow there was already chatter at the base camp, people shuffling in sandals, someone’s laughter cutting through the chill. The air smelled like wet earth and clove cigarettes. I fumbled my banana sandwich but ate it anyway; nerves or excitement, not sure which.

When we finally reached the Mount Batur sunrise point — about 1,400 meters up — everything felt hushed except for the wind. Our guide pointed out where the volcano had erupted back in ‘63, tracing lines in the black sand with his boot. He handed me a boiled egg (still warm) and told us stories about his grandmother climbing here on foot. The sky started leaking orange behind distant clouds, slow at first then all at once. I didn’t expect how quiet everyone would get when that first light hit — even the guides stopped talking for a minute.

The drive down through those black lava fields was rougher than I thought — like riding over old bones, someone joked. There were pockets of steam rising from cracks in the ground and I kept thinking about how new and ancient this place felt at once. We ended up at the natural hot spring by late morning; you could smell sulfur but also frangipani from someone’s shampoo nearby. Sliding into that warm water after hours in dusty jeans was honestly perfect — muscles just sort of let go. Wayan waved from across the pool with a towel over his head like a monk.
