The experience
The trek begins with hotel pickup between 1:30 and 2:30 AM, a drive through Bali's quiet countryside toward Kintamani, and arrival at the mountain base by 3:30 AM. Your guide meets you there and you start climbing the volcanic trail under stars at 4 AM. The hike takes roughly ninety minutes to the summit, where you arrive between 5:45 and 6:15 AM. Timed to catch the sunrise. At that hour, the view opens across Lake Batur below, Mount Agung rising to the east, and the surrounding peaks catching the first light. Breakfast happens at the top while you're still standing in it.
After sunrise, you have time to walk the volcanic crater rim and photograph the landscape before the descent begins around 7 AM. The trail down takes you back through the same scenic routes, and by 8:30 AM you're at the natural hot spring beside Lake Batur. The water is warm and mineral-rich. You soak while the lake and mountains stay visible across the water. The whole experience, pickup to drop-off, runs about eight hours.
What you carry: a flashlight, a walking stick, bottled water and fresh fruit. The vehicle is air-conditioned for the drive. Lockers and towels are provided at the hot spring. Your guide speaks English and knows the mountain's geology, local culture and the stories of the region. Children from age five are welcome on the trek.
Is this one for you?You choose between three options at checkout: the full trek with hot spring included, meeting the guide at the trailhead instead of hotel pickup, or the trek alone without the hot spring soak. Pick the full package if you want the complete experience with transport and relaxation built in; choose the meeting point option if you're staying near Kintamani and want to save on pickup; select trek-only if the hot spring doesn't appeal to you.
