The Experience

I’ll admit it — I didn’t expect the drive from Delhi to Agra to be so oddly calming. There’s this early haze over the fields, and our driver (Rajesh) had this playlist of old Bollywood songs humming quietly. I kept looking out the window, half-awake, then suddenly there was the Yamuna river and that first glimpse of the Taj Mahal peeking through the morning mist. It’s almost surreal how it just sits there, like it’s waiting for you.

Our guide, Aarav, met us with this easy smile and an umbrella (which I didn’t think I’d need but wow, that sun). He told us stories about Shah Jahan and Mumtaz that made the marble feel less like a postcard and more like someone’s heartbreak. The marble is colder than I expected if you touch it — smooth but not slippery. There were families posing for photos everywhere, but somehow it still felt quiet in spots. Aarav pointed out little details in the inlay work — tiny bits of lapis lazuli — and I tried to imagine carving something that small without ruining it.

After lunch (spicy but not too spicy — they asked what we liked), we walked through Agra Fort. The red sandstone walls are rougher under your hand compared to the Taj’s marble. You can see all these little balconies where people must’ve stood centuries ago. At one point, a group of schoolkids waved at us and practiced their English (“Where are you from?”).
