The Experience

The first thing I remember is the smell of woodsmoke drifting through the courtyard as we stepped out of the car in Osian. Our driver from Jodhpur had been humming along to some old Bollywood song, and I was still half-lost in that tune when a woman waved us over with a smile and handed me a cup of sweet chai. I burned my tongue (as usual) but didn’t care—there was something about standing there, watching goats wander past the gate, that made everything slow down for a minute.

We visited the Sachiya Mata Temple first—our guide, Vikram, pointed out the stone carvings with this quiet pride. He told us stories about Jain monks and desert traders while kids played cricket nearby. The air inside was cool and faintly dusty, incense mixing with that dry desert wind. Afterward, we walked back to their family homestay for more tea (I think they just like seeing tourists try to sit cross-legged on those woven mats). My legs went numb but nobody seemed to mind.

The camel safari was bumpier than I expected—I almost dropped my phone twice trying to take pictures of peacocks darting through the brush. Vikram laughed when I tried to pronounce “nilgai” (blue bull)—I definitely butchered it. We watched the sun dip low over the dunes; everything turned gold and pink for about five minutes. There were deer in the distance, barely visible unless you squinted hard enough. Dinner was cooked over an open fire: smoky dal, flatbread straight off the pan, something spicy I couldn’t name but kept eating anyway. I still think about that meal sometimes when I smell cumin or woodsmoke at home.
