The Experience

The first thing I remember is the blue haze of Jodhpur from the car window — that color really does creep up every wall. Our driver, Raj, grinned when I asked if it was always this busy near Mehrangarh Fort. “Wait till you see inside,” he said. The fort itself felt less like a monument and more like a living maze: cool stone under my hands, echoes of old footsteps in those winding halls. Our guide pointed out bullet marks on the gate — I didn’t expect to feel goosebumps from a history lesson.

We wandered through Jaswant Thada next, where the marble almost glowed in the midday sun. There was this faint scent of incense drifting from somewhere — maybe an offering? I tried to take a photo but honestly, it never captures how quiet it feels there. Umaid Bhawan Palace was next; part-museum, part-hotel (and apparently still home to royalty). The museum had these old clocks and photographs that made me wonder what life here looked like before all the tourists showed up.

After lunch (I still think about that dal), we drove out toward Osian for the camel safari — about an hour outside Jodhpur. The desert air felt different; drier, with a kind of sleepy warmth even as evening crept in. My camel was named Raju and he seemed unimpressed by my attempts at conversation. Our camel guide laughed when I nearly slid off trying to get on (“Lean back!” he shouted). Watching the sun drop behind those dunes — well, it’s quieter than you’d think out there. Just wind and sand and a few distant voices carrying over the ridge.

I kept some sand in my shoes all the way back to town. Not sure why that sticks with me, but it does.
