The Experience

I didn’t expect the quiet to hit so hard out in the Thar Desert. We’d left Jodhpur around 2pm—our driver, Mahesh, was early and grinned when I tried to pronounce “Osian” (I still can’t get it right). The road out was bumpy but somehow soothing, passing blue-washed houses and then nothing but sand and scrub. Before we reached the camels, we stopped at two temples: Sachiya Mata first, then the Jain Temple. The marble there felt cold even in the heat. There were locals lighting incense, a smell that lingered on my shirt for hours.

After that, we ended up in this tiny desert village where a family welcomed us with chai and more smiles than words. I was shown to a low-slung hut—mud walls, colorful blankets—and told to rest before the camel ride. I tried lying down but mostly just listened to goats outside and kids laughing somewhere nearby. The camel safari itself? Honestly, I was nervous at first (camels are taller than they look), but our guide kept making jokes about “Rajasthan’s ships.” The sky started turning pink as we rode out—wind picking up grit that got everywhere, but I didn’t care.
