The Experience

We’d barely finished our first cup of chai when our driver pulled up outside the hotel—right on time, which honestly surprised me given how lively Amritsar’s streets already felt that morning. Our guide, Manpreet, greeted us with a grin and a quick “Sat Sri Akal!” before weaving us through the old city’s tangle of rickshaws and temple bells. The air near the Golden Temple was thick with incense and something sweet—maybe cardamom?—and I remember pausing just to watch the sunlight bounce off all that gold. Inside, people moved quietly, barefoot on cool marble floors, and Manpreet whispered stories about Sikh history as we passed volunteers rolling out endless stacks of chapati for the langar kitchen.

I didn’t expect to feel so welcome in the langar hall. There were families, students, even a few travelers like us—all sharing food shoulder to shoulder. We tried Amritsari kulcha stuffed with potatoes (so good) and washed it down with lassi that tasted almost like dessert. After lunch, we walked over to Jallianwala Bagh; it’s quieter there, but heavy too. The bullet marks in the walls made everything real in a way I wasn’t ready for. Manpreet let us take our time—no rush—which I appreciated.

By late afternoon, we were headed out toward the Attari-Wagah Border for the flag ceremony. You could feel the energy building as crowds gathered—kids waving flags, vendors selling popcorn, soldiers lining up in crisp uniforms. When the drums started up and everyone began cheering for their side (India! Pakistan!), it was impossible not to get swept up in it all. We got lucky with VIP seats (apparently sometimes you don’t know until you arrive), so we had a perfect view of the whole thing—the stomping boots, high kicks, even some friendly waves across the border fence. On the drive back to town after sunset, I realized I hadn’t checked my phone once all day.
